If you're expecting, you've probably heard the advice to cut back on caffeine. That morning cup of coffee might be one of your favourite rituals, but during pregnancy, it’s worth taking a second look at what’s in your mug.

Why Is Caffeine a Concern During Pregnancy?

Caffeine is a stimulant that affects your nervous system and your baby’s. Unlike adults, babies in the womb can’t break down caffeine efficiently. Here’s what that means for you:

  • Caffeine crosses the placenta. Once you drink it, it travels through your bloodstream and reaches your baby.
  • Your baby’s body is still developing. Their liver isn’t mature enough to process caffeine, so it lingers in their system much longer than in yours.
  • It affects growth. High caffeine intake has been linked to lower birth weight and, in some cases, an increased risk of miscarriage.
  • It can raise your heart rate and blood pressure. During pregnancy, your body is already working harder than usual. Extra stimulation isn’t ideal.
  • It can interfere with your sleep. And we all know that rest is precious when you’re growing a human.

How Much Is Too Much?

South African health experts and international bodies like the WHO recommend that pregnant women limit caffeine to no more than 200mg per day, which is roughly one cup of filter coffee. But caffeine isn’t just in coffee. It also sneaks into tea, chocolate, energy drinks, and even some headache medications.

If you’re having more than one cup a day, or if you're extra sensitive to caffeine, even that amount could be too much.

Common Caffeine Side Effects During Pregnancy

Many expecting mothers report:

  • Heart palpitations
  • Jitters or shakiness
  • Acid reflux or heartburn
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Increased anxiety

These side effects are amplified by pregnancy hormones, which slow digestion and make your body more sensitive to stimulants.

What’s the Best Alternative?

If you're looking to cut back without giving up your comforting coffee moment, MannaBrew is the perfect caffeine-free solution.

  • It’s made in South Africa from roasted mesquite bean powder. It’s rich in flavour, naturally sweet, and completely caffeine-free. (Decaf coffee does still contain some caffeine)
